1. Overview

The FAW-Volkswagen Foshan factory was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission on May 31, 2011, and the Foshan branch of FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd. was officially established on July 22, 2011. The project is invested and operated by FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd. The phase I project has an investment of about 18.118 billion yuan and an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles, while the phase II project has an investment of about 15.885 billion yuan and an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles. The factory primarily produces the latest Volkswagen and Audi products and the latest new energy vehicles. The auto manufacturing base now has an annual production capacity of 600,000 vehicles.

2. Production and operation of the plant

FAW-Volkswagen Foshan factory was built in two phases. The phase I project has a floor space of about 1 km2, and an auto manufacturing base composed of a stamping workshop, welding workshop, painting workshop, and assembly shop has been built, with a total area of about 584,780m2. The phase II project is composed of a stamping workshop, welding workshop, painting workshop, and assembly shop, with a floor space of 0.6 km2.

Vehicle production started in September 2013 at the phase I project and in June 2018 at the phase II project. Thus, an auto manufacturing base with an annual production capacity of 600,000 vehicles was formed. In 2018, the FAW-Volkswagen Foshan factory achieved a total output value of about 41.69 billion yuan and a tax value of about 2.539 billion yuan.

Currently, it produces several models including Audi A3 Sportback, Audi A3 Limousine, Golf A7, Golf R-Line, Golf GTI, Golf Sportsvan, and T-ROC.

3. MEB new energy electric vehicle project

According to the 2025 strategic development plan, the Foshan factory will transform itself into an MEB electric vehicle production base and a model for FAW-Volkswagen's future electric vehicle strategy.

The estimated total investment in the MEB new energy electric vehicle project is 11.8 billion yuan. The project was started in July 2018, and was put into production in 2019. It produces Golf electric vehicles and Audi Q2 electric vehicle, and will also produce four MEB electric vehicle models from 2020 to 2022. Meanwhile, the professional high-voltage battery pack manufacturing system, which corresponds to the MEB platform, will also be built and put into operation at the Foshan base.

4. Parts production base and logistics park

The parts production base has a floor space of about 1.1 km2, and the logistics park has a floor space of about 0.9 km2. By 2018, more than 35 supporting enterprises with an output value of about 7.117 billion yuan and a tax value of 293 million yuan had been created.
