Maoming devoted to promoting forestry development

Maoming has been promoting the development of its forestry industry in recent years to boost the construction of a National Forest City.

The city strives to build a modern system for forest management. Its two districts, three county-level cities, Binhai New Area, and Maoming High-tech Industrial Development Zone have formulated the relevant forest management plans as well as its 12 State-owned forest farms. It has also issued the forest fire prevention plan for the period of 2021 to 2025.

Maoming has been strengthening the protection of forest and wetland resources, and strictly implementing the responsibility system for pest control. It also gives priority to ecological protection, develops rural tourism and eco-tourism, and accelerates the transformation and upgrading of the forestry industry.

The city currently has 98 forest parks, 12 wetland parks, 38 nature reserves, one geological park, five provincial-level forest towns, and 55 national forest villages.

Relying on leading enterprises, Maoming has created characteristic ecological tourism and formed a featured forestry industry system. The city has planted over 70,000 mu (4,666.67 hectares) of exocarpium and 80,000 mu of agilawood. There are over 20 wood processing enterprises above designated size in the city with an annual wood processing capacity of over 1 million metric tons.

Maoming is the largest lychee production area in the world. It currently boasts a lychee plantation of nearly 1.36 million mu, accounting for about half of the production in Guangdong, one-fourth of China's production, and one-fifth of the world's production. It is expected to achieve a lychee output of more than 600,000 metric tons this year.

By the end of 2020, Maoming accumulated two key national-level leading forestry enterprises and 13 provincial-level leading forestry enterprises. In 2020, Maoming's total forestry output value was 22.05 billion yuan ($3.41 billion), an increase of 27 percent from that in 2015.
