Shenzhen builds Asia's largest solar power system
A solar power system in Shenzhen with a production capacity of one megawatt passed an examination by a team of experts in September, 2004, signaling that Asia's largest solar power system was soon to be put into operation.
Located at the Shenzhen International Garden and Flower Expo Park, the system was designed and constructed by several national organizations, including the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Science.
It is expected that annual electricity generation capacity of the system could reach 98,000 kilowatt hours.
With an investment of 66 million yuan ($9.91 million), the system is able to transform solar energy into power through a large number of semiconducting components.
Compared to thermal power generators of the same scale, the solar power system will produce 170 metric tons less carbon dioxide emissions and 7.68 tons less sulphur dioxide, without any pollution to the environment, according to an expert from the provincial environment bureau.
