President Xi Jinping has called on prominent political and economic figures from across the globe to contribute wisdom to promoting China's exchanges with the world and to building a community with a shared future for mankind at a time when the country is close to its victory of eradicating poverty.

Xi made the call in a letter of congratulations on the opening on Friday of the three-day Understanding China Conference 2020 in Guangzhou, Guangdong province.

This year's gathering is attended offline or online by more than 600 renowned politicians, strategists, scholars and corporate leaders from around the world. It is the fifth in the series of conferences.

In his letter, Xi said the world is experiencing great changes that have not been witnessed in a century, and the unexpected outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic once again shows that mankind is a community with a shared future.

Faced with various complicated, serious challenges, mankind needs more than ever to bolster cooperation, join forces to overcome difficulties and move forward by joining hands, Xi said.

He noted that a comprehensive plan for China's development during the period of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) was made during the Fifth Plenary Session of the 19th Communist Party of China Central Committee, a key Party meeting last month.

China is about to achieve its goal of building a moderately prosperous society in an all-around way as well as securing a decisive victory in getting rid of poverty, Xi said. Next year, the country will embark on a new journey of building a modernized socialist country in an all-around way, and will enter a new stage of development, he added.

In his letter, Xi anticipated in-depth thinking, dynamic discussion and consensus forged by the delegates, and he said he hopes they will contribute wisdom and strength to promoting exchanges and cooperation between China and the world and to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Gordon Brown, former British prime minister, said in a speech via video that now is "an important moment" for the country as it prepares its new five-year plan, and he said that China has taken hundreds of millions of people out of poverty," again an achievement unparalleled in human history".

At the conference, Vladimir Norov, secretary-general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, said,"Today, China's invaluable experience in the fight against poverty and the comprehensive measures taken by its leadership are being actively implemented in many countries around the world."
