Huizhou is located in the southeast of Guangdong province, the northeast end of Pearl River Delta, to the north of Daya Bay of South China Sea and adjacent to Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Apart from Shenzhen, Huizhou is the second mainland city closest to HongKong. Huizhou is in the Pearl River Delta economic zone. Under its jurisdiction, there are Huicheng and Huiyang districts, and Boluo, Huidong and Longmen counties. Huizhou has two state-level development zones: Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone and Zhongkai Hi-Tech Development Zone. The permanent population of Huizhou by the end of 2021 was 6.07 million.

Huizhou is located at the transportation hub of the eastern area of Guangdong, and there are Huizhou-Shenzhen, Huizhou-Heyuan and Huizhou-Guangzhou expressways connecting other cities; Guangzhou-Shantou Highway, Shenzhen-Shantou, Chaozhou-Dongguan and Xiamen-Shenzhen expressways, Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou Railway and Beijing-Kowloon Railway run through Huizhou City, and there are expressways running through each County (District) of the city. Huizhou Port connects to the ports both at home and abroad directly.

As one of the large coastal cities in Guangdong province, its land area is 11,343 square kilometers, its sea area within the territorial sea baseline is 4,519 sq km, and its coastline is 281.4 km long. Alternating with peninsulas and bays, there are a number of good ports and 140 islands.

Huizhou is a historical city of Guangdong province. It has been historically known as "A Famous Prefecture of Lingnan" and "The Gate of Easten Guangdong". During a time span of more than 1,000 years from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) to the modern times, more than 480 Chinese celebrities had been guests or visitors at Huizhou. Renowned poet Su Dongpo of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) once lived in Huizhou for three years. Sun Yatsen, Zhou Enlai once did revolutionary work in Huizhou. A number of democratic fighters and revolutionaries such as Liao Zhongkai, Deng Yanda and  Ye Ting had come from Huizhou.

Huizhou is endowed with rich natural resources, especially tourism resources. It has more than 900 scenic spots with potentials for tourism development. With a variety of resources, Huizhou is a combination of natural beauties and cultural attractions. Mountains, rivers, lakes, seas, springs, waterfalls, forests, gorges and islands can all be found here. Six places have been listed as state-level or province-level scenic spots and natural reserves. Here you can find Luofu Mountain - "The First Mountain in Lingnan", Nankun Mountain - "The Oasis on the Tropic of Cancer", Xunliao Bay - "The Eastern Hawaii" and Huizhou West Lake - "The Beautiful Xizi". The only sea turtle nature protection area is located in Huizhou.
