During the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20) period, Maoming has planned 271 key transportation projects, with a total planned investment of 114.63 billion yuan ($17.13 billion), and is expected to build itself into an important traffic hub in west Guangdong province.

In July 2018, the Jiangmen-Maoming section of the Shenzhen-Maoming Railway was put into operation, which allowed Maoming residents to take trains directly to Guangzhou. In addition to ending the history of Maoming, Yangjiang, and Zhanjiang having no access to bullet trains, the Jiangmen-Maoming section of the Shenzhen-Maoming Railway also integrated people in west Guangdong into the Pearl River Delta economic and living circles.

From then on, the travel time of a passenger train between Maoming and Guangzhou has been shortened from more than five hours to two and a half hours, while that between Maoming and Shenzhen has been reduced from nearly seven hours to less than three hours.

In addition, the travel time of a passenger train between Guangzhou and Zhanjiang was also halved to three and a half hours due to the opening of the Jiangmen-Maoming section of the Shenzhen-Maoming Railway.

The Shenzhen-Jiangmen section of the Shenzhen-Maoming Railway is under construction. Totaling a length of 116 kilometers, this section will have a total investment of 52.1 billion yuan and is expected to be finished by 2024.

Construction of the railway between Maoming East Railway Station and Bohe Harbor was started at the end of 2019. It has a total investment of 4.17 billion yuan and spans a length of 49.9 km. The rail link between the Luoyang-Zhanjiang Railway and the Bohe Harbor Railway is also under construction.
