The opening ceremony of the test section of the Beibu Gulf Rim Water Resources Allocation Project in Guangdong province was held in both Guangzhou and Maoming through video link on Dec 25.

The project is composed of one main line and three parting lines. It will draw water from the Yunfu section of the Xijiang River, and will transport water to cities like Yunfu, Maoming, Yangjiang, and Zhanjiang.

The total length of the water transmission lines is about 477 kilometers, and the water-receiving area exceeds more than 4 square kilometers. The designed water flow rate is 92.5 cubic meters per second, and the annual water supply amount totals 1.63 billion cu m.

The test section of the project is located 5 km north of Hejiang town in Huazhou, a county-level city in Maoming. It has a planned investment of 147 million yuan ($22.51 million).

The Beibu Gulf Rim Water Resources Allocation Project is a major water conservancy and livelihood project that systematically solves the water shortage problem in the western part of Guangdong.

It is expected to greatly improve regional water supply capacity and regional water ecological environment, as well as promote regional development.
