Maoming makes great achievements in poverty alleviation

Maoming in Guangdong province has made great achievements in its poverty alleviation efforts through the implementation of various measures.

All of the 66,860 registered impoverished households, with a total of 155,709 people, have been lifted out of poverty, as well as all the 180 provincial poverty-stricken villages in the city.

By the end of July, there were 45,102 people in poverty who were able to work, of which 40,991 have found employment.

The medical preferential policies for serious diseases have covered all the impoverished people in the city. More than 46,000 impoverished people received medical assistance, involving a total amount of nearly 15.82 million yuan ($2.34 million).

Maoming has focused on industrial development as its main way of promoting its poverty alleviation and rural revitalization efforts.

The city is the largest grain and vegetable production base in the province, as well as the largest fruit and economic forest production base in the nation. Depending on these resources, the city has been promoting the development of characteristic industries in its villages.

Tanru village has soil conditions suitable for radish plantations and has been renowned for its dried radish. The 54 impoverished households in the village have been included in the radish breeding cooperatives. They used their abandoned land and joined the cooperatives as shareholders, with dividends distributed according to the proportion of land contributed.

The radish planting area in the village has been expanded to 3,600 mu (240 hectares), with a total output value of 24.6 million yuan.

To date, there has been one national modern agriculture industrial park in Maoming, one national agricultural science and technology park, two national pastoral complexes, as well as seven provincial modern agriculture industrial parks, covering the 786 administrative villages in the city and benefiting 2.52 million people.

Maoming also attached importance to poverty alleviation through consumption measures.

By the end of July, the city has sold out 26,570 "love cards" to promote poverty alleviation through consumption, as well as carried out more than 400 sales activities. A total of 11,500 metric tons of poverty alleviation products were sold, valued at 160 million yuan.

The industrial poverty alleviation bases and impoverished households in the city have earned a total income of more than 120 million yuan through consumption-driven poverty alleviation efforts.
