Maoming in South China's Guangdong province saw a total investment of 54.7 billion yuan ($8.46 billion) during the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), an increase of 105 percent over the period.

The city has built 55 kilometers of new railway lines during the past five years, while electrification work was conducted on 59 km of lines. The total length of railways opened to traffic reached 319 km, up 21 percent.

The mileage of newly-built expressways totaled 236 km between 2016 and 2020, and the length of expressways that were opened to traffic was 451 km, an increase of 117 percent.

A total of 7.81 billion yuan has been invested by the city in the construction of national and provincial highways over the past five years, with newly-built and renovated highways reaching 161.7 km in length, and with a pavement reconstruction length of 526.6 km. The city also renovated 37 dilapidated bridges on national and provincial trunk highways.

To date, the mileage of national and provincial highways in Maoming stands at 1,998.7 km.

The city has also been promoting the construction of roads in its rural areas, and invested 3.64 billion yuan between 2016 and 2020.

More than 5,600 km of rural roads were either built or renovated over the past five years, an increase of 124 percent; 192 dilapidated bridges on the rural roads were reconstructed; and a total of 2,942 km of road safety and life protection projects were completed.

The total length of rural roads in Maoming now exceeds 16,500 km, and all "natural" villages with more than 100 residents now have access to hardened roads.

A total of 644 million yuan was invested in the construction of three passenger terminals and one public transportation station, while port and waterway construction saw an investment of 4.6 billion yuan, including four berths at 10,000 tonnage and above.

Maoming Port now has 19 berths for production, including 13 berths at 10,000 tonnage and above, and its cargo handling capacity has reached 45.79 million metric tons, up 99.35 percent.

There are currently 10 shipping enterprises in Maoming, including two for passenger transport and four for dangerous goods, and 38 shipping agent enterprises. The number of ships totals 60, with 733 passenger seats, while the waterway transport capacity in 357,000 tons, up 28.19 percent over the period.
