Maoming nature reserve reveals rare animals

Good news was reported again in Hewei Mountain Nature Reserve in Maoming. Video footage of a pangolin, a national class I protected wild animal, was recently recorded for the first time in Maoming.

The nature reserve has always been a native habitat of the Chinese pangolin, which was once thought to have become extinct.

According to experts, the ecological environment on Hewei Mountain Nature Reserve is very suitable for pangolins to live.

The ecological environment of Hewei Mountain Nature Reserve is getting better and better. Ocelots, yellow-bellied weasels, wild boars and the national class I protected wild Paphiopedilum purpuratum flowering plant were also photographed at the Hewei Mountain Nature Reserve.

The discovery of the pangolin and Paphiopedilum purpuratum has filled in the blank spaces in the record book for national class I protected wildlife in Maoming.

So far, the forest coverage rate in the nature reserve has reached 96 percent, and 90 percent of the non-commercial forests have been rated as national and provincial-level forests.

There are 974 species of wild vascular plants, of which six are under the State's protection and 10 are rare and endangered ones. Twenty-two of the 87 terrestrial vertebrate species are under the State's protection.
