Maoming's 14th sports meeting was held at Maoming stadium on Nov 26. In preparation for the 17th Guangdong Provincial Games to be held in Maoming in 2026, the city is striving to improve its public sports services.

The youth group competition of the sports meeting started at the end of October, while the adult group competition started in November. Various competitions are currently underway.

The sports meeting includes both professional sports such as weightlifting, shooting, and wrestling, as well as national fitness programs such as dancing, Chinese chess and badminton.

In recent years, Maoming has made strides in developing its national fitness and competitive sports industries. The city holds more than 20 large-scale national fitness activities every year, including sports festivals, dragon boat games and football games.

From 2016 to 2020, Maoming athletes won one Asian championship, 13 national championships, seven national youth championships, and 38 Guangdong youth championships. It also sent nine athletes to the Guangdong sports team and 80 to the Guangdong provincial sports schools.

Maoming is currently preparing for the 17th Guangdong Provincial Games. Construction on the Maoming Olympic Sports Center started last year at the cost of 2.6 billion yuan ($408 million) and will cover an area of 300,000 square meters. It is expected to be completed by 2025.
