Maoming is making efforts to become a national forest city. With a vision to realize innovative, coordinated, green, open and inclusive development, the city has become a national garden city and one of the best tourist cities in China.

In 2016, Maoming started to build itself into a national forest city. Starting this year, the three county-level cities of Xinyi, Gaozhou, and Huazhou have begun making efforts to turn themselves into national forest cities. Xinyi and Gaozhou have already issued comprehensive plans to this end.

Maoming has built 60 public parks and green areas, upgraded 89 parks, and built 107.54 kilometers of ecological belts. Its urban green coverage rate reached 44.31 percent, and its per capita park green area reached 18.17 square meters.

Maoming is home to 98 forest parks, 12 wetland parks, 38 nature reserves, one geological park, and five provincial forest eco-tourism demonstration bases. Five villages and towns in Maoming were recognized as forest ones in Guangdong, and 55 villages were rated as national forest villages. Its forest coverage rate has reached 55.81 percent, and the total volume of standing timber has reached 3.17 million cubic meters.
