The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs recently released a list of national advanced collectives in grain production, in which Guangdong had five shortlisted collectives, including one in Maoming.
In recent years, Maoming has strengthened its leadership in grain production to prevent and combat disasters, improving grain quality and increments, as well as ensuring safety.
Maoming's total grain output has ranked first in the province for many years. In 2019 and 2020, it was rated as excellent in the Guangdong provincial grain assessment. In 2020, it was commended by the Guangdong Provincial Government. In 2021, both its grain output and area achieved growth that exceeded the annual tasks assigned by the Guangdong Provincial Government.
In 2021, Maoming's rate of improved varieties of rice reached 92 percent, the area of improved hybrid rice was 88 percent, the area of rice seedling-throwing cultivation was 90 percent, the area of improved super rice was 35 percent, and the yield rate was 93.38 percent.
Maoming has implemented policies that benefit farmers, such as rice insurance and farmland protection subsidies. The coverage rate of rice insurance in 2021 will reach more than 96 percent. In order to stabilize the area of grain production, Maoming carried out activities to investigate and eliminate wasteland, as well as to promote the restoration of wasteland.
Relying on agricultural technology extension centers and stations at all government levels, Maoming has continuously improved the original agricultural science network, upgraded agricultural technology extension methods, as well as greatly improved the ability of agricultural service guidance.
Maoming has carried out high-standard farmland construction, improved the organic matter in grain fields, as well as promoted the application of organic fertilizers to improve the productivity of grain fields and the ability to resist and reduce agricultural disasters.
