Maoming set out to become a national civilized city and a national sanitary city in 2017 and was named a national sanitary city on Jan 14, 2021, as well as a nominated national civilized city for the 2021-2023 period by the Civilization Office of the Central Communist Party Committee on Jan 26, becoming the only city in Guangdong province to receive the honors in 2021.

At present, its construction work has reached the consolidation and improvement stage.  It has invested over 300 million yuan ($47.16 million) to complete the upgrading of 27 old communities with 283 units as part of its efforts to successfully create a national civilized city. Maoming will continue to intensify its efforts to renovate old communities and promote the renovation of 729 old communities, which will directly benefit 68,000 residents, with an estimated total investment of 1.9 billion yuan.

Maoming is also promoting the comprehensive management of farmers' markets. At present, a total of 175 farmers' markets in Maoming have been included in the comprehensive management, 144 of which have been upgraded and renovated, while six will be changed or closed.
