Maoming is the world's largest lychee production base, accounting for about one-fifth of the world's lychee area and output. In 2021, the city's lychee industry chain achieved an output value of more than 10 billion yuan ($1.55 billion), with the total revenue of lychee fresh fruit sales reaching 7.12 billion yuan.

Genzi town in Gaozhou, a county-level city in Maoming, is known as the home of lychees. It has been 2,000 years since this town planted lychees. As early as the Tang Dynasty (618-907), lychees from Gaozhou were used as a tribute to the imperial court of ancient China. There is an old lychee orchard in Baiqiao village, Genzi town, called Gongyuan Orchard. It is said that the lychee that Gao Lishi, a eunuch from the Tang Dynasty, paid tribute to the renowned beauty Yang came from this orchard.

Last year, Gaozhou launched a lychee customization activity. Twenty-one companies from Guangdong, Jiangsu, Hainan, and other places conducted lychee customization and reservations online and offline, with the pre-sale amount exceeding 1.2 million yuan.

In 2022, the planting area of Maoming lychee is about 1.35 million mu (90,000 hectares), with the harvest season expected to start in mid-May.
