Maoming home to 231 enterprises producing moon cakes

Known as China's "moon cake city," Maoming, Guangdong province currently is home to 231 enterprises producing moon cakes, a significant increase from the 44 it had in 2016.

The city's quantity, output, varieties, and brand of Cantonese-style moon cakes rank first in the country. In addition, Guangdong has the largest number of moon cake enterprises in the country, with more than 60 percent of the country's varieties and 70 percent of the country's output.

Maoming's moon cake manufacturers account for one-third of Guangdong's total, ranking first among China's prefecture-level cities. The variety of moon cakes produced in Maoming accounts for about 80 percent of Guangdong's total.

Maoming moon cakes originated from the Zhenguan Reign (627--649) of the Tang Dynasty. It has a history of more than 1,300 years, as well as a profound cultural heritage and a long history of production techniques. After years of development, the Maoming moon cake industry has grown to a considerable scale, realizing the transformation from small workshops to modern production techniques, with more than 100,000 people employed.

Maoming has held several meetings to solve the difficulties and problems encountered in the development of moon cake enterprises, providing support so enterprises can grow. At the same time, industry experts and university scholars have been invited to jointly make suggestions for the development of the Maoming moon cake industry, forming a strong synergy to promote industry development.

Every year, Maoming holds various special moon cake cultural activities to boost the popularity and reputation of moon cakes, as well as to enhance enterprise development.
