With the new standards, the Maoming–Zhanjiang Expressway expansion project phase I is to achieve "4 + 2" access, which will provide four right lands and two light lands from Maoming to Zhanjiang.

The Guangdong Maoming-Zhanjiang Expressway expansion project phase I (Guanzhu to Linwu section) route from the town of Guanzhu, Dianbai district, smoothly connected to the Shenhai Expressway Yangjiang-Maoming section, and finally to Huzhou's Liangguang town, will follow the existing highway expansion with a route length of 69.4 kilometers and a design speed of 120 km per hour. It will be a two-way eight-lane highway standard expansion on both sides of the available space.

The high speed expanded expressway will have up to 139 bridges, 200 culverts, and 19 separate interchanges, in situ reconstructions of Lin Tou, Maoming, Aotou, Qianshui, and Yangmei; and a new airport north interchange. It will feature two interchanges; one new service area, and expansion of an existing service area.

Up to now, construction of the main part of the first phase of the Maoming–Zhanjiang Expressway expansion project phase I has been completed, and the project has entered the "4 + 2" phase of passage and will soon enter the full eight-lane passage. After the completion of the first phase of the MaoMing-Zhanjiang Expressway project, vehicles can be diverted through the Dachangkou interchange and Linwu interchange to Baomao, Shantou-Zhanjiang Expressway, alleviating pressure on traffic flowing from Maoming to the Linwu interchange.
