There are 53 species of national key protected wildlife in the Guangdong Yunkai Mountain National Nature Reserve, accounting for about 28 percent of the national key protected wildlife in Guangdong province. Three of the wild animal species are under first-class national protection and 50 species are under second-class national protection.
The Yunkai Mountain Nature Reserve includes the main peak of the Yunkai Mountain Range, Datianding, at an altitude of 1,703.8 meters. Due to the southern subtropical monsoon oceanic climate and the significant temperature differences caused by the elevation, the Yunkai Mountain Nature Reserve is often filled with clouds and fog.
There are 366 species of terrestrial wild vertebrates in Guangdong Yunkai Mountain National Nature Reserve, including 34 species amphibians, 64 species of 48 genera in 21 families of two orders of reptiles, 212 species of 139 genera in 53 families of 15 orders of birds, and 56 species of 38 genera in 17 families of seven orders of mammals.
