On Dec 22, a super organic tilapia quality specification promotion meeting was held by the Maoming city agricultural and rural industries association at the Maoming Sangao Good Breeding Base simultaneously with the inauguration ceremony of the Sangao Super Organic Tilapia Breeding Demonstration Base.

Maoming is known as the "Tilapia Capital of China," due to having a breeding area of up to 260,000 mu (17,333 hectares) and an annual output of 235,000 metric tons. It accounts for one-eighth of the national tilapia output and one-twelfth of the global output, making it the core production area of the world's tilapia industry. Maoming tilapia has long been exported to the United States, the European Union, Russia, and many other countries.

At present, the tilapia breeding area in Maonan district is 44,700 mu (2,980 hectares), with an output of 38,000 tons, and the tilapia fish breeding area is more than 5,600 mu, with an annual production of more than 2 billion tilapia fish of high quality. The release and promotion of the group standard "super organic tilapia quality" will support the transformation and upgrading of the tilapia industry, protect its quality, efficiency and sustainable development and sustain its leading role.

"For the first time, super organic tilapia has broken through the organic standards in Europe and the United States, which allows better supply to the national and even worldwide markets," said Professor Wang Anli. He also pointed out at the promotion meeting that Maoming super organic tilapia pre-prepared vegetables are sold to the whole world at high prices and high quality, which helps to transform and upgrade agricultural production and promote rural vitalization.

Xu Run, the chief scientist of the Chinese Academy of Fisheries Science, pointed out that the concept of super organic tilapia is more stringent than organic tilapia, and its breeding environment and ecological feed requirements are more scientific, ecological and demanding.
