During the Spring Festival holiday, a variety of folk culture activities added to the festive atmosphere in Maoming.

Maoming's Spring Festival celebrations are more unique than other regions as "Nianli" folk customs are seen throughout local villages, making the Spring Festival more lively and exciting. During this time, characteristic and traditional folk performances are staged.

Many people believe that the origin of the Nianli Festival is related to the worship of Madame Xian. She became a heroine for protecting the Lingnan area (Guangdong and the nearby provinces in southeastern China) from enemies during Sui Dynasty (581-618). Madame Xian has been the main god of worship in western Guangdong since the Tang Dynasty (618-907).

On the evening of Feb 7, a lantern viewing activity was held in Liushuang village, Long town, Xinyi county-level city, Maoming, which attracted many people. A parade of more than 1,500 people stretched for several kilometers, most of whom were carrying a variety of handmade lanterns as they waded through the crowds.

Liushuang lanterns have been listed as intangible cultural heritage items of Guangdong province and are unique to Maoming.
