Lychee, longan conference shows Maoming's booming fruits industries

The China International Tropical Crops Industry and the 7th Lychee and Longan Industry Conference were held on May 20 in Maoming, showing Maoming's booming lychee and longan industries.

Maoming is the world's largest lychee cultivator. Maoming also boasts the province's biggest longan production base, which accounts for half of the province's total output. The city has hosted three sessions of the lychee and longan conference to date.

In 2021, Maoming's total revenue from fresh lychee sales reached 7.12 billion yuan ($1 billion). In 2022, the sales revenue of fresh lychees in Maoming was 8.1 billion yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 13.34 percent.

In 2022, the total export of lychees from Maoming reached 103 million yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 121.22 percent. The average price of lychees on e-commerce platforms was 26 to 36 yuan per kilogram. The production value of the lychee industrial chain is 11 billion yuan, involving 150,000 jobs every year. The per capita income of prominent lychee-producing towns is 30 percent higher than the whole city of Maoming.

At present, there are 20 lychee export bases in Maoming, covering an area of about 10,000 mu (667 hectares). In 2022, Maoming's lychee exports reached 5,156 metric tons, with a year-on-year growth of 77.18 percent.
