Maoming Library held a special book sharing and reader meetup on Aug 22, with renowned author Ma Boyong sharing his latest book The Litchi Road with the audience.

In his novel set during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Ma takes readers on a journey following the story of Li Shande, a Litchi courier.

During the event, Ma expressed his keen interest in discovering the cuisine and local culture of Maoming, as the city is known for its rich natural resources and interesting geographical features.

He also showed great interest in historical figures from Maoming, such as Pan Maoming, Madam Xian and Gao Lishi.

Ma had previously intended to visit Maoming. He introduced its stories to the director and cast of television program The Longest Day in Chang'an with plans to adapt the book into a film or TV series.

Ma said he became inspired to write the book during a conversation about poetry with his son while eating litchs. He wondered what stories could unfold from the people transporting the fruit during the Tang Dynasty and how they managed freshness and logistics issues.

By exploring the perspective of a little-known character, Ma delved diligently into countless challenges, enabling him to complete the book in just 11 days.

Maintaining his curiosity is a big part of Ma's writing process. He plans to take his son to Maoming to experience lychee picking firsthand, enabling him to understand the significance of the fruit.
