The local unit of China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation, or Sinopec discussed a massive project on Nov 17 at a key meeting in Maoming city, Guangdong province.

The project involves a total investment of over 30 billion yuan ($4.16 billion) and is considered a key project for the Maoming subsidiary to achieve its next leap forwards in terms of its development.

It comprises a refinery buildout, as well as an ethylene production upgrade. The refining transformation will see the construction of four units using Sinopec's proprietary technology, while the ethylene upgrade will involve the construction of 12 units.

After the implementation of the project, the Maoming unit will operate a chemicals refining process boasting substantive "catalytic cracking and base oil quality improvements."

This will result in decreased yields for finished oil products and increased production of ethylene, while promoting the concept of green development throughout the project.

The complex is expected to be completed and go into operation by the end of 2026. The group says it will enhance the production of high-end synthetic materials, such as metallocene polyethylene and propylene oxide, as well as other types of chemical raw materials.

More than 2 million metric tons of chemical products will be produced each year – driving the development of the petrochemicals industry in Maoming and in the entire South China region.
