On Feb 26, the village of Liushuang in Zhenlong town, Xinyi city, Maoming, welcomed its lively day of the year. Tourists from various places flocked in to participate in the annual custom and admire the Liushuang lanterns.

In the village, fireworks lit the night sky, and gongs and drums filled the air. Lantern teams from six natural villages carried lanterns, beat drums, and danced with lion dances as they gathered at the cultural square. Led by two dragons, the lantern teams from each village proceeded sequentially, weaving through the village paths and crowds.

The annual tradition of lantern touring in Xinyi Liushuang has been faithfully upheld for over 390 years, embodying the richest and most authentic agricultural culture of the western Guangdong region.

The Liushuang lanterns are made of bamboo strips, rice paper, well-wishes, and candlelight, crafted entirely by hand. They embody the essence of primitive agriculture, historical heritage, and a rich local flavor permeated with the vibrant culture of Lingnan.

Each year, on the evening of the 17th day of the first Chinese lunar month, families participate in a procession carrying lanterns, forming a vibrant village parade known locally as the annual Lantern Festival custom.

In 2022, the Liushuang Lantern Festival was included in the eighth batch of the list of representative provincial intangible cultural heritage projects in Guangdong province.
