Guangdong province has launched its first hydrogen energy highway project, connecting Guangzhou and Zhanjiang. This development was announced at the opening ceremony of the 2024 China Hydrogen Industry Conference on Oct 18. The project includes the construction of hydrogen refueling stations along the highway, with Maoming set to build one hydrogen refueling station by the end of 2025.

The Guangzhou-Zhanjiang Hydrogen Energy Highway Demonstration Project spans several cities, including Guangzhou, Foshan, Dongguan, Jiangmen, Yangjiang, Maoming, and Zhanjiang. It aims to serve the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Hainan, and southeastern Guangxi. The project leverages major highways and national roads, forming a critical network for the transportation of seafood, fresh meat, and vegetables.

By establishing hydrogen refueling stations at key logistics nodes, the project addresses challenges related to hydrogen storage and high transportation costs. It also promotes the use of fuel cell vehicles in cold chain logistics, reducing carbon emissions and enhancing the quality of cold chain distribution in Guangdong.

By the end of 2024, the project plans to deploy 500 4.5--metric-ton and 10 49-ton fuel cell refrigerated trucks, creating an initial hydrogen-powered cold chain logistics network along the highway and the Pearl River Delta. Multiple hydrogen refueling stations will be built and 2,000 4.5-ton and 100 49-ton fuel cell refrigerated trucks will be deployed by the end of 2025.
