Pohang is an important industrial port city in the east of the Republic of Korea. It is where Pohang Iron and Steel Company, one of the largest iron and steel companies in the world, is headquartered.

With an area of 1,127.24 square kilometers, Pohang has a population of 520,000. The city has been marked as a steel city as many large iron and steel enterprises have settled here, including INI Steel and DongKuk Steel. It has established multiple iron and steel research institutes with many scientists from all over the world dedicated to pushing forward the upgrade and development of the iron and steel industry. Besides the traditional dominant iron and steel industry, the city has also expanded its business to other industries, such as machinery, auto parts, IT, shipping and new energy. The Pogang container port will make the city an international logistics center. In the future, Pohang is bidding to become an international commercial metropolis and a bellwether in developing hi-tech business.

Pohang also owns abundant agricultural and aquatic resources. Its aquatic products are exported to many countries.

Pohang is also an ideal tourist destination. The beautiful landscape along the 162-kilometer-long coastline and the numerous cultural heritage sites makes the city a popular cultural tourist resort. There are also many traditional festivals held in the city, during which tourists can experience traditional Korean culture.

Pohang has established multiple universities, such as the renowned Pohang University of Science and Technology and Handong University. Major research institutes include the Third Generation of Radiation Light Accelerator Research Institute, the Steel Surface Composite Processing Technology Support Center, the National Center for Nano Technology Integration, the Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology, and the Institute of Intelligent Robots.

The city has established sister city ties with Long Beach city and Pittsburgh in the US and Fukuyama city in Japan.
