Guangdong Ocean University, the leading institute of higher learning in Zhanjiang, is expected to play a greater role in the local economy in fields such as pharmaceuticals, oceanic engineering and information services.

Those information services include meteorology, ocean currents and location of resources, said Ning Ling, dean of the college of economics and management of the university.

He said the university creates technological know-how, offers expertise in development and planning to governments and other organizations, and supplies talent to society.

The dean said it leads the country's universities in aquaculture, food science and oceanic sciences with doctoral programs starting in the three fields earlier this year.

It is one of the earliest in Guangdong to start programs in ocean economic management and oceanic law.

Zhanjiang has five institute of higher learning, second only to Guangzhou in Guangdong province. It has 63 vocational schools, nine provincial-level labs, 13 provincial-level engineering centers, and more than 90 corporate research and development institutions.
