Guangdong Medical College is one of Guangdong’s key universities that confer doctor’s degrees. Its undergraduate education is among the country’s best, according to the Ministry of Education. It is also on the top list of Guangdong’s demonstration universities.

The college, founded in 1958, was formerly the Zhanjiang Campus of Zhongshan Medical College, which was restructured into Zhanjiang Medical College in 1964, offering five-year undergraduate programs. The college was renamed Guangdong Medical College in 1992 and was approved to award master’s degrees in 1986 and doctoral degrees in 2013.

The college has two campuses in Zhanjiang and Dongguan, with 11 secondary institutes, three teaching departments, two directly affiliated hospitals, 30 non-directly affiliated hospitals and 113 teaching hospitals. It has a total of 21,202 full-time students, including 20,307 undergraduate students and 895 graduate students this year.

The college has one first-class discipline entitled to confer a doctorate, two first-class and 57 second-class disciplines entitled to confer a master’s degree, 24 joint postgraduate cultivation bases, and a post-doctoral research center.

It offers 22 undergraduate programs covering medicine, science, engineering, management, literature and law, with 28 doctoral advisors, 546 postgraduate advisors, 14 experts that enjoy the State Council’s special allowances, four famous professors in Guangdong, and two academicians employed in the two institutes.

The college is now in possession of three provincial key disciplines, three provincial key labs, five department-level key labs, three municipal key labs, four construction sites for national special disciplines, two famous disciplines in Guangdong, four provincial special disciplines, a key discipline in Guangdong, six provincial demonstration centers of experimental teaching, one national and six provincial teaching practice bases for college students, one provincial experimental area for innovating personnel training modes, one provincial teaching team, five excellent provincial courses, five provincial high-quality shared courses and three provincial high-quality open classes in video. Directly-affiliated hospitals of the college have 14 key clinical specialties of Guangdong, 15 professional physician clinical training bases and nine national professional clinical drug trial bases.

The college has been run for 56 years with a school motto of setting up ambitions and moral standards while pursuing truth and refinement. It has cultivated 45,000 students, who have played an important role in Guangdong’s economic and social development, some of whom are prestigious and influential academic leaders. Kang Jingxuan, a professor from Harvard Medical School who got a nomination for the Nobel Prize, and Chen Weizheng, a global immunologist and a tenured professor of the University of Illinois studied at Guangdong Medical College.
