The city has developed into a key city in Moscow Oblast in the fields of education and culture, science and technology, national defense, and automobile manufacturing.

Serpukhov now has 146 manufacturing enterprises engaged in various industries, among which there are 31 large and medium-sized enterprises. There are also more than 400 small enterprises.

The city has established several well-known universities and research institutes, including the National Defence University engaged in developing rocket weapons and cultivating professional military technicians, an air force training base, and a sky-port.

Serpukhov has established sister city ties with the following cities: Richmond (USA), Lindau (Germany), Forssa (Finland), Zaslavl and Sluck (White Russia), Chadir Lunga (Moldova), Lvano Francovsk (Ukraine), Verona (Italy) and Vraca (Bulgaria).
