A mass calligraphy event was held at the Shao Lin School in Zhanjiang on Jan 1, to celebrate the New Year in a series of delicate strokes.

More than 1,000 people of all ages took part in the event, practicing calligraphy in copybooks and were given professional guidance and tutelage from experienced calligraphy masters.

The event, organized by Zhanjiang Research Center of Chinese National Culture was aimed at promoting the art of traditional Chinese calligraphy.

Zhang Jun, headmaster of the secondary school, encouraged those taking part to sit up straight in order to become an "upright" member of society.

The Shao Lin School in Xiashan district was established in 1995, consisting of a primary, junior and senior high boarding school. It was honored as a demonstration school for traditional Chinese culture in 2013 by the Guangdong government.
