One-hundred underprivileged freshmen received a 5,000-yuan ($734) scholarship from the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation at an award ceremony held at the Zhanjiang International Convention Center on Aug 27.

The Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation was set up in 2010 in memory of Mr Ng Teng Fong, the founder of real estate titan Sino Group. Over the years, it has donated over 1.9 billion yuan in charity.

In 2015, the foundation allocated 100 million Hong Kong dollars ($12.7 million) to the Ng Teng Fong Scholarship to support impoverished college students in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.

Huang Zhixiang, president of Sino Group, believes that education is the foundation of national prosperity and social development, said a representative of the foundation, extending congratulations to the scholarship recipients.

Zhong Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Zhanjiang Municipal Committee, encouraged the award-winning Zhanjiang students to make the most of the scholarship and give back to society.

Meanwhile, Zhanjiang's business environment was also promoted at the award ceremony in an attempt to convince the guests from Sino Group to invest in the city.
