Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron & Steel has come one step closer towards its goal of becoming a world-class industrial powerhouse of green development and high efficiency, with the construction of the No 3 blast furnace now in full swing.

The new blast furnace will focus on the production of hot-rolled and cold-rolled ultra-high-strength steels, as well as auto shell sheets, while adopting a new ultra-low emission standard throughout the process.

Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron & Steel is a steel production base that was built by Baosteel, one of China's largest steel manufacturers, to eliminate outdated capacity and optimize industrial structure in line with the national strategy.

The company has adhered to the philosophy of "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets" and been active in absorbing advanced techniques to increase energy efficiency and reduce emission, said Sheng Genghong, chairman of Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron & Steel.

The No 1 and 2 blast furnaces adopt 1,660 energy-saving and environment protection technologies that involve a total investment of more than 6.5 billion yuan ($967 million). Their comprehensive utilization rates of solid waste and secondary resources lead the industry, while the emission indexes are well above environmental assessment standards.

Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron & Steel was named a frontrunner in the national iron and steel industry in terms of water efficiency by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in 2017 and came first in the recommendation list of 2018 iron and steel enterprises for clean production and environmental-friendliness.

Aside from that, the industry giant is now a key driver in Zhanjiang's economic development. The iron and steel industry contributes 23.3 percent to the growth of the industrial economy. Its output value accounts for 15.2 percent of the city's total output value of industrial enterprises above designated size.
