Nansan Island is located in the southeastern part of Zhanjiang, Guangdong province. It is the gateway to Zhanjiang, with the shortest distance from Nansan Island to the city downtown being only 1.8 kilometers. Made up of 10 small islands, Nansan Island covers an area of 123.4 square kilometers. Its coastline is 83 kilometers long and its registered population is 99,000.

The island is uniquely endowed with high-quality tourism resources. The gentle terrain, the beautiful coastal scenery, the ecological environment, and the vast wetland have attracted a number of tourists in recent years.　

With the improvement of its transportation infrastructure, Nansan Island has entered the fast lane of rapid development. The newly built main road will start construction this year, and will connect the Zhanjiang beltway with key development areas of the island. After completion, it will greatly improve the road network structure, improve the production and living conditions of the islanders, as well as better promote tourism development and high-quality economic and societal development.

Nansan Island has also introduced a number of key projects and well-known enterprises. China Shipbuilding Industry Co (CSIC), a Fortune Global 500 enterprise, plans to build a ship maintenance support base, a laboratory of marine science and engineering, as well as an offshore floating wind power research center.

The Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of Southern Marine Science and Engineering is a project being developed by the Zhanjiang government, CSIC, and Guangdong Ocean University. With an investment of 5 billion yuan ($708.21 million), the laboratory will focus on marine equipment, marine energy, and marine life. The offshore floating wind power research center will help to enhance the overall strength and technical level of the offshore wind power industry.
