Naozhou Island is a volcanic island formed about 200,000-500,000 years ago. It is the biggest volcanic island in China. It lies to the south of Donghai Island, east of Leizhou Bay, northwest of the South China Sea, and east of the Pacific Ocean. The total area of the island is about 56 square kilometers. The island boasts beautiful scenery and pleasant climate all year round. Places of historic interest and scenic areas on the island include: Nayanhai Rock Patch, a well-known tourist resort that boasts an ideal seaside bathing resort; the Naozhou Lighthouse, one of the three most famous lighthouses in China; and the former site of the palace built during the Song Dynasty (960-1279).
