The west approach bridge of the Tongming Sea Mega Bridge of the Donghai Island-Leizhou Highway closed on Dec 31, 2019, laying a solid foundation for the bridge to be completed and opened to traffic in 2020. Upon completion, it will be the longest sea-crossing double-tower cable-stayed bridge in western Guangdong. It was invested in and constructed by Nanyue Transportation Investment and Construction Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Guangdong Communications Group. Construction of the bridge began in October 2016.

The bridge has a total length of 5,762 meters and a tower height of 121 meters. It is designed to be suitable for 3,000-ton seagoing vessels with the navigable hole spanning 338 meters at the main bridge.

After completion, the Donghai Island-Leizhou Highway will connect Donghai Island with Leizhou and Fenyong Hi-tech Economic Zone, reducing travel time from 80 minutes to less than 30 minutes.
