Zhanjiang in South China's Guangdong province recently released its implementation plan for 2020 to quicken its development into a national ecological garden city, improve its urban functions, and build a livable environment.

According to the plan, Zhanjiang will focus on work projects this year, including construction of a water-saving city, landscaping and afforestation, sewage treatment and ecological environmental protection, to ensure it will pass examination by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in September and lay a solid foundation for national assessment and acceptance in 2021 to be a "national ecological garden city".

The city will finish the basic construction of Yihai and Wenzhang parks in 2020, and promote the construction of several small gardens to increase per capita green space in parks. It will also complete the upgrading of Haitian Park and renovate 21 toilets in parks around the city. 

Zhanjiang will improve the living environment by carrying out the classification of household garbage to enhance its recyclability and build demonstration zones in its urban areas for the classification of household garbage.

Construction and transformation of roads in Zhanjiang will also be sped up. The expansion of Xiashan Water Treatment Works is expected to be finished this year, while that of Chikan Water Treatment Works will start sometime this year.

Zhanjiang will also accelerate the construction of kitchen waste treatment works, as well as the expansion of household waste incineration power plants and the transformation of refuse transfer stations in urban areas. Drainage works on roads will be advanced to solve problems of road drainage and traffic jams.
